The Alexander Technique Consultancy

Violinists /String players / Musicians. violinist much smaller

Alexander Technique lessons can help you transform the quality of ‘action’ in string playing, gain more control of breathing in singing. They can enhance freedom and stage presence in performances.

I'm also a very experienced full-time professional violinist and give violin lessons in Windsor and London

  • Encourage efficient and 'healthy' practice.
  • Gain more confidence and reliability of technique in performance.
  • Enhance good instrumental and vocal teaching with awareness of unconscious habits that interfere with good co-ordination.
  • Prevent misuse that can lead to joint and limb problems such as stiffness, pain and RSI
  • Learn to be aware of the patterns of thinking that limit movement, breathing and co-ordination that, in turn, limit musicality.

It's so important to recognise that exercises and ‘therapies’ that are designed to help  'fix' problems directly - perhaps even gently, do not address the critical problem of habit on a moment-to-moment basis. This is the crux on which deep learning and development of skill depends and this is exactly where the Alexander Technique comes into its own.

As a 'successful' professional performer (violinist) making his living from playing at the highest levels Alun has a clear understanding of the pressures involved in maintaining a good performance level. He has given several solo recitals for BBC Radio Three, at numerous festivals and music clubs also working regularly with the major orchestras in the UK.

His work with the Alexander Technique and music especially string playing, dates back over twenty years including seven years at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where he was the senior Alexander Technique teacher and department coordinator. He has also taught at the Guildhall School of Music in London.

He gives regular workshops to musicians of all abilities and ages.

Lessons are usually 1 hour in length. Some people like to take Alexander lessons and violin lessons concurrently. They can be tailored to suit your requirements.
